What is Sludge?

Sludge is the remaining solids mixed with liquids. Sludge is removed and managed in a way similar to wastewater, but is more detail-oriented. Sludge represents a biohazard, and if not handled correctly can lead to the contamination of surrounding soil and land. This is why great care needs to be taken when handling it to prevent spills.

Vacuum Truck

How is Liquid Waste Removed?

The process of removing large quantities of waste water from a city or business involves the use of specialized vehicles equipped with a high-powered pump and tank. Waste water is suctioned from the facility's holding tanks, interceptors, or directly from process equipment into the tank of the vacuum truck. The tank is then transported to a proper disposal site, such as a treatment plant or holding facility. The vacuum trucks are designed to handle a wide range of waste water types and can be used for routine pumping, emergency response, and cleanup.

Hydro-Vac Truck

How is Sludge Removed?

The process of removing sludge requires heavier equipment than the vacuum trucks used for wastewater. Hydro-Vac trucks use high-pressure water and vacuum suction to remove waste sludge and other heavy materials from pipes, tanks, and other containers. The water loosens the sludge, and the vacuum system then sucks it into the tank on the truck or and external storage container to be hauled away for disposal. This method is efficient and minimizes the potential for spills, making it a popular choice for cleaning out the sludge in waste systems.
